HOW TO SEAL YOUR NATURAL STONE: A STEP BY STEP GUIDE

Natural stone is chosen for its character, durability and timeless appeal. Whether it's marble, limestone, travertine or sandstone, proper sealing is essential to protect the surface and preserve its appearance for years to come.

While every stone has different characteristics, most natural stones are porous to some degree. Without the right protection, they can absorb moisture, oils and everyday contaminants that may lead to staining or discolouration.

Fortunately, sealing natural stone is a straightforward process that can significantly extend the life of your surfaces.

Why Does Natural Stone Need Sealing?

Natural stone contains tiny pores that can absorb liquids over time. In kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor spaces, this can result in staining from food, oils, water or other everyday substances.

Applying a high quality impregnating sealer helps protect the stone by reducing absorption while allowing the material to breathe. Importantly, it preserves the natural appearance of the stone rather than creating a surface coating.

How Often Should Natural Stone Be Sealed?

As a general guide, natural stone should be resealed every one to three years, although this will depend on:

  • The type of stone

  • How porous the material is

  • The amount of daily use

  • Whether the surface is indoors or outdoors

  • The type of sealer previously applied

High traffic kitchen worktops, bathrooms and external paving may require more frequent maintenance than decorative wall cladding or low use areas.

Choosing the Right Sealer

We recommend using a high-quality impregnating sealer suitable for your chosen stone.

Unlike topical sealers, impregnating sealers penetrate the stone to provide long-lasting protection without changing its natural colour, texture or finish.

Step 1 – Clean the Surface

Remove all dust, dirt and surface contamination using a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft cloth or mop.

Allow the stone to dry completely before applying any sealer, as trapped moisture can affect performance.

Step 2 – Test the Sealer

Always test the product on a discreet area first.

This allows you to confirm compatibility with the stone and check that the finished appearance meets your expectations.

Step 3 – Apply the Sealer

Using a clean cloth, sponge or roller, apply an even coat across the surface, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Work methodically to ensure complete and consistent coverage.

Step 4 – Allow the Sealer to Penetrate

Leave the sealer to soak into the stone for the recommended time, typically between five and fifteen minutes depending on the product.

Avoid using the surface during this period.

Step 5 – Remove Excess Sealer

Once the sealer has penetrated, wipe away any excess with a clean, dry cloth.

Removing surplus product helps prevent streaks or residue forming on the surface.

Step 6 – Allow the Surface to Cure

Leave the stone to cure fully before exposing it to water or heavy use.

Most impregnating sealers require approximately 24 hours to reach full performance, although you should always follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Ongoing Maintenance

Regular cleaning with a pH-neutral stone cleaner will help maintain the protective seal and preserve the appearance of the surface.

Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or acidic products, particularly on marble and limestone, as these can damage both the stone and the sealer over time.

With the correct care and periodic resealing, natural stone will continue to perform beautifully for many years.
